When Tesla announced it had added bitcoin to its balance sheet in early 2021, it sent the bitcoin price sharply higher and sparked a wave of speculation that other companies could follow in its footsteps—though few ever did.
Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl that Tesla could add bitcoin and crypto support to his social media platform X, which has quietly been acquiring money-transmitter licenses across the U.S. and has said it plans to “revolutionize” payments in 2024.
China cryptocurrency
The threat of capital flight remains a priority for the PBOC as the Chinese economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as China launches its “common prosperity” campaign. Former PBOC advisor Li Daokui has warned that the relatively fast economic recovery of the US could fuel greater capital flight, as Chinese residents may be inclined to purchase assets in the US for greater financial security.
The results can be confusing. While officials at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian in June 2017 welcomed a World Economic Forum whitepaper, “Realizing the Potential of Blockchain”, less than three months later the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) announced an immediate ban on ICOs – initial coin offerings, through which crypto start-ups raise funds for development – and the shutdown of all domestic cryptocurrency exchanges.
The FCA and Bank of England have also proposed regulations for stablecoins. Stablecoins are designed to be more stable in value than cryptocurrency by having their value tied to that of another asset. You can find out more about the differences between cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in our explainer.

To be successful in cryptocurrency trading, you will need an effective trading strategy. What is it? A trading strategy is simply a plan that you will follow when executing your trades. It will comprise the kind of assets to invest in, the frequency of your trades, and your investments’ size.
Crypto trading is profitable, but only if done correctly. Follow the steps, strategies, and tips shared throughout our guide, and you will be in a better position to make profitable trades. And a golden rule: Plan your trade, trade your plan.
Uphold is a solid multi-asset trading platform for anybody looking to purchase precious metals, fiat currencies, stocks, and cryptocurrencies. In addition, unlike many of its rivals, Uphold provides carbon credit tokens, which are a kind of eco-currency.
Cryptocurrency wallets
The Blockchain.com Wallet gives you custodial and non-custodial wallet options in the same app, making it easy to buy, sell, store, and secure your crypto with less effort than managing multiple wallets or apps.
The main difference between custodial wallets and the types mentioned above is that users are no longer in full control of their tokens, and the private keys required to sign for transactions are held only by the exchange.
A crypto wallet is a digital tool that enables you to store, manage, and interact with your cryptocurrencies. Unlike traditional wallets that hold physical cash, a crypto wallet stores the keys needed to access and manage your digital assets on the blockchain. Your keys come in two forms: public keys, which are like your bank account number and can be shared with others to receive funds, and private keys, which are akin to your PIN and should be kept secret to protect your assets.
For a popular all-in-one hardware wallet, consider the Crypto.com DeFi Wallet, widely regarded as one of the most trusted and secure wallets to store NFTs — and voted the best NFT wallet 2024 by TradingPlatforms.
Some wallets are specifically designed to be compatible with a framework. The European Union is creating an eIDAS compatible European Self-Sovereign Identity Framework (ESSIF) which runs on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). The EBSI wallet is designed to (securely) provide information, an eID and to sign ‘transactions’.
